Why a rugged laptop or tablet makes sense in the workshop

The workshop is not about the device, it is about throughput. If a laptop crashes, a port is missing or a fall ends its life, diagnostics and documentation stop immediately.

Typical requirements: RS-232 and RJ-45 for diagnostics, protected port covers, operation with gloves, optionally bright displays, and a setup that simply works day to day.

The IP rating describes protection against dust and water (IP53 for indoor or covered areas, IP66 for very harsh surroundings). MIL-STD refers to test procedures for drops, vibration and temperature. In a workshop the point is not maximum figures, it is the right level for your work.

Typical use cases

• Diagnostics: RS-232 and RJ-45, stable ports, ready to use without a chain of adapters.
• Documentation: checklists, photos and logs, also with gloves and in rough surroundings.
• Connectivity: network and tools on site, docking at the workbench, optionally LTE for field work.
