ATEX tablet: 6 explosion-protected tablets compared

An ATEX tablet, also called an Ex tablet, is certified for potentially explosive atmospheres. Six tablets in our range carry an ATEX or IECEx statement: five for Zone 2/22 and the Getac ATEX EX80 for Zone 0/20. No laptop with an ATEX or IECEx marking is among them.

A device without approval for the zone in question may in principle not be operated there, even if it carries IP66 and MIL-STD-810H. Ruggedness and explosion protection are separate requirements. Why that is so and which businesses are affected is covered in the article ATEX and explosion protection. This page is about selection.

The table gives the marking as it appears in the data sheet. Where the data sheet states no marking line, we do not resolve anything ourselves. The overview is dated 26.10.2026.

* For the F110-EX and the K120-EX the operating system is not listed in the data sheet on this site. The entry comes from the manufacturer data sheet (PDF) of the device.

On the dust line of the UX10-EX: in the German manufacturer data sheet (dated 23.09.2026) the dust line is preceded by “TBD:”, in the English one it is not. The table gives the line without the prefix, like the data sheet on this site. If you need the line to be binding, have the manufacturer confirm it in writing.

For the EX80 and the T800 EX ATEX the zone statement comes from the product page. Getac has removed the manufacturer data sheets for both models from its own offering.

Ex laptops: none with an ATEX or IECEx marking

According to the data sheets, no laptop in our range carries an ATEX or IECEx marking. Three Getac laptops list an optional approval to ANSI/UL 121201 and CSA C22.2 NO. 213 (Class I, Division 2) in the manufacturer data sheet: the V110 G7, the V120 and the X600. That is the North American system of Class and Division and not an ATEX approval. How the two relate is explained in the article IECEx, ATEX and Class I Division 2.

Some tablets also list this option, for example the ZX80, the ZX80W, the F120 and the G140. For zones under EU law it does not replace an ATEX marking.

Zones 0, 1, 2 and 20, 21, 22: what the zones mean

The zones classify areas by how often and for how long an explosive atmosphere is present. Zones 0, 1 and 2 apply to gases, vapours and mists, zones 20, 21 and 22 to combustible dust. The classification is set out in Annex I of Directive 1999/92/EC (German text) and the assessment in individual cases in IEC 60079-10-1 for gas and IEC 60079-10-2 for dust.

Zone gas Zone dust Explosive atmosphere Permitted equipment category
0 20 present continuously, for long periods or frequently Category 1
1 21 occasionally in normal operation Category 1 or 2
2 22 normally not in normal operation, or only briefly Category 1, 2 or 3

The assignment of categories is in Annex II Part B of Directive 1999/92/EC. The categories themselves are defined in Annex I of Directive 2014/34/EU: Category 1 requires a very high, Category 2 a high and Category 3 a normal level of safety. “Ex II 3G” therefore stands for Category 3 and gas, “Ex II 3D” for Category 3 and dust, both for Zone 2 and 22 respectively. How to read the marking character by character is shown in the article Reading the ATEX marking. We do not repeat that here.

Ex tablet for Zone 1: what the data sheets offer

For Zones 1 and 21, none of the six data sheets states a rating of its own. Under Annex II Part B of Directive 1999/92/EC, equipment of Category 1 or 2 belongs there. The five tablets for Zone 2/22 carry Category 3 or, in the case of the T800 EX ATEX, a zone statement without a marking line. They are not listed for Zone 1.

The EX80 is listed for Zone 0/20, which corresponds to Category 1, and according to the table above that category is also permitted in Zone 1. Whether it suits your gas, explosion group and temperature class cannot be answered from our records: the marking line is missing and there is no manufacturer data sheet any more. An explosion protection specialist clarifies that with the manufacturer.

Which Ex tablet suits your area

In short: for Zone 2/22 with a complete marking, consider the Getac UX10-EX at 10.1 inches, the Getac F110-EX at 11.6 inches, the Getac K120-EX at 12.5 inches and, with Android, the Getac ZX80-EX at 8 inches. For Zone 0/20 only the Getac ATEX EX80 is available. For anything beyond that, know the zone, gas group and temperature class of your area before you enquire.

Two Ex variants from Durabook are not in the table because our data sheets do not list them as devices of their own. The product page of the Durabook U11I gives Zone 2/22 for the U11I-EX variant, with “Ex II 3G Ex ic IIC T4 Gc” and “Ex II 3D Ex ic IIIB T135°C Dc”. For the R8-EX on the page of the Durabook R8, the product page names no zone. For the new generation of the UX10-EX there is the article Getac UX10-EX, new generation.

Limits: Our data sheets list no Ex tablet larger than 12.5 inches and no Ex laptop. The operator sets the zone of the site in the explosion protection document. The marking applies to the certified configuration, so have the configuration and accessories confirmed in writing.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between ATEX and IECEx?

ATEX refers to the EU Directive 2014/34/EU for equipment in potentially explosive atmospheres. IECEx is the IEC’s international certification system based on the IEC 60079 series of standards. Five of the six data sheets state ATEX/IECEx, the T800 EX ATEX only ATEX. The relationship to Class and Division is explained in the article IECEx, ATEX and Class I Division 2.

May a tablet for Zone 2/22 be used in Zone 1 or 21?

No. Under Annex II Part B of Directive 1999/92/EC, equipment of Category 1 or 2 belongs in Zone 1 or 21. The lines “Ex II 3G” and “Ex II 3D” of the Zone 2/22 tablets mean Category 3.

Is an Ex tablet automatically waterproof?

No. Rating and explosion protection are tested separately. According to the data sheets the six tablets carry IP65, IP66 or IP67. The waterproof tablet page shows which tablets withstand immersion.

Who determines the zone of my site?

The operator. The operator classifies the areas under Annex I of Directive 1999/92/EC and records the result in the explosion protection document. The zone of the site cannot be read from any device line.
